Hand Tool Reviews

Hand tools become like an extension of a carpenters body. When we're wearing our pouch, we don't even need to look to find the tool we need. We just have to reach back and we know exactly where it is in our pouch. Many of the tools I have listed here are tools I keep with me at all times in my pouch. Some are tools I keep in my tout. As I go through the tools I'll inform you which I carry and which I store. On many jobsites, some have been surprised when they see some tools I carry in my pouch. Il go onto the reasons why I carry each tool.

30" Telescopic Magnat

This small but very handy tool stays with me in my pouch at all times.  I wish I could say I never drop things, but the fact is, sometimes the really tiny screws seem to just jump out of your hand. This tool has saved me many times.

  • Extends up to 30 inches
  • Magnet pulls up to 15 lbs.
  • Black handle

Long Arm Allen Keys

This set, I do not carry with me in my pouch, this set stays in the tout for when I need it. But it's a must have for any contractor. The longer arm make it easier to really get a good grip.

Automatic Center Punch

Olfa Knife

25' Fat Max Tape Measure

11 In 1 Screwdriver

There are so many times when you need to put a screw in exactly the perfect spot. One example is when installing door hinges. It can be difficult sometimes to start a screw where you need it. This center punch solves that problem. I use this loot a lot, and it stays with me in my pouch.

  • Delivers an automatic, high-impact, spring-loaded strike when pressed against surface.
  • Marks hole locations and starts drill bits and screws, preventing wandering

Obviously every contractor needs an Olfa knife, in fact I have about 10 of them. You always need a knife. So I have one in my pouch at all times, and I have one in almost ever tout and bag I have.

  • Professional strength stainless steel blade channel secures blade for the toughest of cutting jobs

The fat max tape measure is one of the best. I use this about 50% of the time. It's perfect for framing and working with bigger projects, but its a little big for things like trim. This is a must have though. When I'm framing this is in my pouch at all times.

  • Tape rule with first 6 feet reinforced with BladeArmor coating for maximum durability
  • 11-inch tape standout; 16-inch and 19.2-inch stud center markings simplify framing jobs.

Ask any electrician and he will tell you Klein is the best. this tool will last forever. Most electricians don't use the multi tool as often. They buy the individual screw drivers. For us carpenters, generally we are only using screwdrivers a little, so the 11 in 1 is absolutely perfect. This stays in my tout for when I need it.

  • Contains 3/8-Inch, 5/16-Inch and 1/4-Inch nut drivers, no.1 and no.2 Phillips, 1/4-Inch and 3/16-Inch slotted, T10 and T15 torx and no.1 and no.2 square recess.
